PS3 Slim: Discover a new, thinner and lighter PlayStation 3 that will be released in September 2009 at a reduced price and with a very supplied software catalogue available before the end of the year
At gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. unveiled the new interactive PlayStation 3 entertainment system with a clean shape factor and 120GB hard drive.
The internal architecture of the new PS3 system has been completely modified, both in the main semiconductors and in the power supply unit and in the cooling mechanism, in order to obtain a much thinner silhouette and a much lighter weight. The internal volume, thickness and weight of this model have been reduced by about one third compared to the very first model of the PS3 with 60 GB hard drive. In addition, electricity consumption has also been reduced by one third, which helps to reduce fan noise.
While inheriting clean and curved lines from the original model, the shape factor of the new PS3 system presents a meticulous design, as well as a textured surface, producing an impression of novelty and an informal appearance. With its compact silhouette and informal style, the new model will appeal to a wider audience seeking the best domestic entertainment system.
To accompany the release of the new PS3 system, SCEI will change the PS3 brand name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3, while launching a new logo, engraved on the surface of the new PS3 system. By uniting under the famous name PlayStation (which represents the entire PlayStation family), the PS3, PlayStation 2 and PSP will further expand PlayStation activities, while continuing to improve the entertainment offer alongside the growing PlayStation Network.
The new PS3 will offer the same state-of-the-art features as current models, including the possibility to enjoy movies and games on Blu-ray Disc (BD) in High Definition, as well as the various content and services to download on the network.
The storage space of the new PS3 system has increased from 80 GB to 120 GB. The additional space will allow users to record more games, music, photos and videos as well as various content and services, available through the PlayStation Network. With more than 27 million accounts recorded worldwide (total stopped at the end of July 2009), the PlayStation Network offers more than 15,000 digital content units, ranging from games to trailers to demos and more than 15,000 movies and TV showsvision via the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation Network members can also download free apps, such as PlayStation Home, a 3D social gaming community available on PS3 that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences, or Life with PlayStation, which provides users with all kinds of information and information on a TV screen in the living room by connecting the PS3 to the network.
Since the launch of the PS3 in November 2006, the number of titles on disk has crossed the threshold of 1,000, while downloadable PS3 games reach 1,400 titles worldwide, thanks to the support of a wide range of third-party developers and publishers. In addition to this extensive software catalogue, exciting and exciting new products will be distributed by SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, EyePet, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, MAG, ModNation Racers, Gran Turismo 5 and many more.
